Jubilant Jacob House

Six young lives are to follow a new and more promising path as the doors officially opened to Focus on iThemba’s fourth Cluster Foster Care Home, Jacob House, on 17 February.

Alan and Portia Weyers and their new family were visibly moved by the jubilant event which marked a significant milestone for iThemba - a further step forward in reaching the vision of having 20 self-sustaining homes on the campus.

Located outside Hillcrest and meaning ‘a place of hope’, iThemba is a non-profit organisation with a difference offering foster care, education and life skills training. Through their respected foster care programme orphaned children discover a sanctuary where they are embraced by dedicated parents and have a spectrum of opportunities opened up to them.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Victor Daitz Foundation, Jacob House, a beautiful home overlooking the Valley of 1000 Hills, now houses the Weyers and six vibrant children, ranging from ages 9 to 17. The children have endured great challenges for their young years yet are already blossoming through the love of their new family. In addressing the large crowd attending the opening, including key figures from the local Embo and Upper Highway community, founder and Executive Chairman Danie van den Heever explained the concept at iThemba, “These unique foster carehomes provide a loving family unit to traumatized, vulnerable children.

Here strong family values are instilled to equip the children to reach their full potential and become productive citizens. Victor Daitz was a respected Durban entrepreneur who bequeathed his estate to form a charitable trust to uplift the lives of others,” said Danie. “He was a humanitarian and we are sure he would be proud to see how his generosity has changed the lives of the six children in this home forever.”

Sam Abrahams, Chairman of the Victor Daitz Foundation addressed the gathering saying, “We commend iThemba on being focused on going forward. These children have an outstanding opportunity and they must seize it. We can’t wait to see one or two of you take up leadership roles in KZN. One of our trustees, Kees van der Pol, passed away in December and we would like to dedicate this house in memory of him.”

The dynamic parenting team are determined to provide a warm family life based on a foundation of love and strong values with honesty and respect being foundational pillars. The couple have fostered children in the past and were involved with Childline as volunteers.

“Today is a golden opportunity to fulfil our dream of sharing what we have learnt through our lives with these six children entrusted to us,” said Alan. “We are having the greatest fun with our wonderful new family. Thank you to those who had vision and looked ahead.”

It was an uplifting occasion and guests were inspired by the significant impact of the organisation, the positive power of teamwork and the future vision for iThemba.
