RUNNING FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Focus on iThemba staff and families extend their sincere thanks to Paddy Collins and his team from Highbury Preparatory School for tackling the gruelling 182 km Great Maputaland Run to support the non-profit organisation.

Paddy, the Mr Chips of Highbury, has taught at the school for approximately 25 years. Over the years, he has made a huge impact on the boys he has taught and coached, many of whom keep in contact with him through high school and beyond.

In recent years he has taken to long distance running and has proved invincible. He started the Great Maputuland Run on 23 July at 14:00 hrs at the Hluhlwe Wimpy, and finished an outstanding 24 hours later at the Sizakala Camp at Bhanga Nek.

For the last 14 kms, Paddy walked through deep, soft sand. Two Kearsney College boys ran a part of the distance as did a group of Highbury boys. There was also a team of Highbury boys who cycled part of the distance.

"The Highbury boys and their parents did an incredible job of raising sponsorship monies; in excess of R80 000 was raised," said Nadine Wright, Donor Relations Manager at iThemba. "This was split between four charities, iThemba being one. We are eternally grateful to Mr Collins, Mr Stanley, principal of Highbury, and the Highbury moms who worked extremely hard to organise all aspects of this event. Sponsors need to be assured that all monies donated to iThemba are very well used and stretch a long way to make a real difference in the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. We greatly value the support that Highbury has given iThemba."

iThemba provides innovative quality cluster foster care homes but what makes the organisation unique is the level of quality care, commitment and opportunity that the children receive. Vulnerable children are offered a new direction in their lives supported by loving families rooted in stability and renewal. An independent junior school, based on the 40 acre campus in Hillcrest, has also opened its doors.

"We are currently raising funds for our fifth home, Anna House, which will be opened in the next few months," explained Nadine. "If you would like to partner with iThemba to help us to transform lives, please contact us on 031 716 3336. We would be delighted to have you visit our campus," she concluded.
