LEWIS GROUP BURSARIES CHANGE LIVES

Ten fortunate children excitedly wore a new school uniform at the beginning of the year thanks to generous support from the Lewis Group who provided learners with bursaries. The children are now proudly attending the iThemba Academy in Hillcrest, an innovative primary school.

The recipients of the bursaries are vulnerable children, nearly half have sadly lost one or both parents due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic and others are cared for by one parent or care givers. The children range in ages from 4 to 11 and despite these challenges all demonstrate immense potential. "Our school encourages a love of learning and we are thrilled to have these 10 children in our classrooms who are now benefiting from quality education on this beautiful campus,"said Chris Nel, iThemba Academy Principal.

“The children then had the added challenge of designing a cab that would protect the egg ‘driver’ while at the same time allowing ‘him’ to see clearly and enter and exit the cab when necessary. Once completed, the vehicle designs were tested on a ramp.

Each vehicle’s longest and straightest distance was recorded after two attempts.”
As the morning progressed it was interesting to note how impressive the vehicle designs were and the pride the learners took in the project. Of course there were a few broken eggs but that just motivated the children to try again.

“Technology is a current and interesting subject,” said Sarah. “We recognise the importance of developing learners’ understanding of the ‘made’ world and the role that design thinking plays in the creation of all the things we use each day. We want our learners to be curious and ask questions like, ‘how does a tap stop the water coming out?’, by teaching Technology we can encourage that kind of curiosity and the children learn Maths and Science skills too.”

Easter egg prizes were presented to the learners. Congratulations to all for contributing to such a creative and inspiring morning.
