Extending the reach

A testament to the ethos of the organisation are the iThemba families who are working examples of the organisation’s core values, with each family making the most of the opportunities provided. A key component to this success is the staff – a team of motivated and dedicated individuals who form the backbone of the organisation and continually deliver in terms of strategic direction, administration and psychological support.

The model that iThemba uses aims to not only to care for a group

of children, but also to be an effective training tool for families throughout the communities of South Africa. An external dialogue exists beyond the borders of the organisation where sustainable relationships and partnerships are formed to ensure broad influence and reach. iThemba engages with the community by sharing knowledge in order to educate and empower community leaders.

One of the core beliefs of the iThemba organisation is the importance of strong family structures and wholesome family values, which in turn will curb the effect of HIV/AIDS. Through upholding these wholesome values the core of the family unit is strengthened which has a magnitude of positive effects. Married parents who show love for one another have a significant impact on children and family life. iThemba opens its doors specifically to community leaders but also to the community to share invaluable wisdom through educational seminars and programmes relating to these topic.

Actively Abstinent

iThemba believes that abstinence is an action word. On an individual basis it protects family and is life-giving. On a community level it provides direction and growth, while on a national plane it is what can turn the tide and break the cycle of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The Actively Abstinent campaign incorporates the ‘No Apologies’ programme, which has been translated into isiZulu and Afrikaans. The programme has already reached over 750 000 learners with more than 75% pledging to remain sexually pure until marriage.

Impact seminars

Informative seminars, held on the iThemba campus, are offered to the community and community leaders. Pertinent topics relate to: family values, the importance of family structures and marriage. The SERVE leadership conference, hosted at the campus in June, is an important channel for impacting lives.
